Stream Report: Week 1,July 2009

The waters are perfect this year. There has been good rainfall, keeping the water level good. The smaller tributary streams are shrinking a little and the water temps are rising, typical with this time of year. The temps are holding good in the low 60's due to the rainfall.
The trout are active and Rainbows, Browns and Brookie's seem to be eager to take a fly. High riding Dry Flies seem to be the ticket right now, with hatches coming off periodically throughout the day. Attractor patterns are working good, and terrestrial patterns are starting to pick up.
Streams-
Greenbrier: The water level is good and the temp is running in the low to mid 60's depending on the elevation of the stream. The fish are making use of the water and seem to be all over in different pockets. Caddis seem to be the main hatch at the moment and attractors are working. The lower reaches, especially those accessible are littered with swimmers during the heat of the day. Fish early.
Middle Prong Little Pigeon: The temps are in the low 60's and the water is clear. Being a stream with alot of plunge pools the rainbow fishing is doing well. Look for Rainbows in the fast current in the heat of the day. Clear water requires stealth, and this stream is no exception. With fishing pressure the fish are getting a little skittish, especially the bigger ones.
Oconaluftee: The water level is good and the temps are holding in the low 60's. The elevation on this stream drops fast and there is alot of tree cover. Although the water is clear the shade helps the fisherman with stealth. The stream has an abundance of small eager trout and bushy dries are working well.
Deep Creek: A destination area with swimmers and vacationers the area is a little crowded. The lower reaches near the main parking area gets crowded so arrive early. Hiking a ways in is the best bet for success. Fisherman tend to go in a little ways to try their luck, but not many travel too far. The water level is similar to others given the rainfall this year. Try running a bushy dry or a small bugger to lure a good Brown Trout out.
Brook Trout Streams: The high elevation Brook Trout streams are ALIVE! The rainfall has the flow good. The Brookies are feeding opportunistically and are taking a high floating pattern. Stimulator's, Wullf's and Terrestrials are working good.
